Aboard a ship early in the 20th-century, a middle-aged Italian Romano Patroni tells his life story to Pavel, a Russian businessman he has met in the restaurant of the ship where he is a waiter. Having married Elisa, the only daughter of a banker, while he was still very young, Romano has slowly lost his youthful enthusiasm for an easy life. After the umpteenth argument with Elisa, on whose family’s fortune he depends, Romano goes to a health spa where he meets Anna, a fascinating young Russian woman and he gains her sympathy and love. Content, though shaken by an unexpected passion and happiness, Anna goes back to Russia and leaves him a letter. Madly in love, Romano leaves for Russia too with the excuse of an inexistent job and, after a long journey, finds Anna married to a self-centered person of some importance in a small town. Romano tells Anna that he has decided to live with her forever and abandon Elisa and the family. He goes back to Italy for a divorce, but after talking to Elisa, who has understood everything, he changes his mind and tries to forget Anna. Years later, his arguments with Elisa convince Romano to leave his family. Fascinated and moved by Romano’s tale, Pavel goes back up to the deck to call his wife, with whom he is on honeymoon, and present her to his new friend but...

One of the most famous Russian filmmakers, Nikita Sergeyevich Mikhalkov was born in 1945 in Moscow into the distinguished, artistic Mikhalkov family. His older brother is a celebrated filmmaker Andrei Konchalovsky.  He studied directing at The Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) under Mikhail Romm graduating in 1971. He is also well-known as a versatile actor.

Fame and recognition came with his first feature At Home among Strangers (1974). Mikhalkov established an international reputation with his second feature, A Slave of Love (1976). Inspired by the themes from the Russian classical literature, An Unfinished Piece for Mechanical Piano (1977) and A Few Days in the Life of I.I.Oblomov won several awards. Based on several short stories by Chekhov, the Italian-produced Dark Eyes (1987) was highly praised, and it received the Best Actor Prize (Marcello Mastroianni) at the 1987 Cannes Film Festival and an Academy Award nomination for his performance. It also won the David di Donatello for Best Actress (Yelena Safonova).

Mikhalkov's next film, Close to Eden (1991) received the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival as well as the Russian Academy Award and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Mikhalkov's most famous production to date, Burnt by the Sun (1994), received the Grand Prize at Cannes and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, among many other honours.

His most epic venture to date, The Barber of Siberia (1998) became a runaway box office success.

12, a Russian adaptation of Sidney Lumet's drama 12 Angry Men, received a special Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.
