Lee Chandler lives in silent isolation, working as a handyman for a small apartment complex in a Boston suburb. When his beloved older brother suddenly dies, he finds to his dismay that he's been named the legal guardian of his teenage nephew, Patrick.

Taking leave of his job in Boston, Lee reluctantly returns to his nearby seaside hometown Manchester-by-the-Sea, a place of both cherished and painful memories.

Despite the sudden loss of his father, and in stark contrast to his uncle, Patrick is full of life. A popular student, he juggles hockey, band practice, and two girlfriends. As this mismatched pair stumbles through the mundane details of estate planning and the awkward strain of adolescence, Lee is forced to confront his past, that separated him from his wife Randi and the community where he was born and raised, revealed seamlessly through flashbacks, and the realities of his present.

Manchester by the Sea is a deeply poignant, unexpectedly funny exploration of the power of familial love, community, sacrifice and hope.
