"The Birth of a Nation" at the 45th FEST

The film “The Birth of a Nation” by the American director Nate Parker will be screened out of competition within the Main Programme of the 45th FEST. This is Parker’s feature debut, who first began his career as an actor. He is also the screenwriter and plays the lead in the film. The film won the Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic at the 2016 Sundance Festival.

“The Birth of a Nation” is a historical spectacle based on actual events that tells the story of Nat Turner, the leader of the enslaved man who led a slave rebellion in 1831. The director claims that he opted for an identical title as David V. Griffith’s classic from 1915, out of desire to draw attention to segregation in the American society on which the American film was based on.

Starring alongside Parker, who plays the lead role, are a Hollywood star of a younger generation Armie Hammer, Penelope Ann Miller, a somewhat forgotten actress from Hollywood films from the nineties Jackie Earle Haley, Gabrielle Union and Mark Boone Junior.
